Why Join the Cadets?
From day one, you’ll be challenged, encouraged and supported. Here's just a few of the amazing things cadets get up to:
- Adventure training
- Drill and parade practice
- Fieldcraft
- First aid training
- Camps and expeditions
- Shooting and weapon safety
What Do I Need as a New Cadet?
We know any new cadet (and parents) often feel unsure about what kit is needed and where to get it.
What Cadet Kit Will be Issued?
Each detachment is slightly different, but most new cadets will be issued all basic kit, such as:
- MTP (Multi-Terrain Pattern) combat shirt and trousers
- A beret or cap with badge
- Jacket and T-shirt
- Belt and socks
What Cadet Kit May I Need to Buy Myself?
Speak to your detachment to see what you get issued. Usually parents like to purchase spare uniform, but you will also need to provide your own boots. The kit and accessories you may purchase as a new cadet:
- Military-style boots
- Spare uniform
- Polish, brushes and boot care items
- A water bottle, notepad and a compass
- Training books and posters
What Are the Best Boots for Cadets?
We always recommend looking for boots that are:
- MOD brown or black (check what your detachment allows)
- Lightweight but supportive
- Durable and waterproof
- Comfortable for long wear
Our Cadet Direct top picks for new cadets:
- Combat Pro Boot – a popular choice for serious training
- Cadet Patrol Boots – ideal entry-level option for affordability and comfort
