Expedition Skills For Cadets Handbook 2020

The Expedition Skills for Cadets Handbook is the essential general navigation training guide for all cadets and instructors including army cadets, air cadets and sea cadets. This cut down slim edition is designed as an informative reference source to back up and enhance cadet navigation training within all cadet organisations and units. The handbook has been created to help cadets become confident when reading a map, navigating through unfamiliar terrain and gaining the skills needed to plan their own expedition.

The book also covers the expedition modules in the RAF Air Cadet’s First Class Cadet and Leading Cadet training syallbus. Written by an experienced CFAV and professional author, this expedition skills book is broken down into short, simple to understand chapters, that flow in a logical and easy to comprehend sequence.

The expedition skills handbook starts with the basics, like learning what map symbols mean and how to work out 4 and 6-figure grid references. Then moves on to finding out what important land features look like on a map and learning how to plan a safe, enjoyable walking expedition. Then finally on to more advanced navigational techniques and gives step by step instructions on how to use a map and compass effectively. Chapters include:

BASIC MAP READING
Types of map, map symbols, grid references, contour lines, land features

EXPEDITION PLANNING
Planning expeditions, the countryside code, route cards, equipment and clothing, campsites, cooking and stoves, cold injury, heat injury

NAVIGATION
Types of north, setting a map, finding north, the compass, using a compass, estimating distance, other navigational techniques, weather, clouds

This expedition handbook combines information from multiple sources into a single guide that can be taken home between parade nights enabling cadets and instructors to learn and plan while away from the unit environment. Fits easily into a smock or combat trouser pocket. Printed in full colour and features clear and newly produced photos, illustrations and data divided into 3 clearly defined sections. Size: A5 (56 pages). Weight: 120g.

OK but info is not covered in detail

20th July 2020 by
For the price I think the level of detail is not quite up to grade. The other cadet handbooks have more info to cost benefit. I think for this subject save the money and get a navigation book.

Good book - only essential information really

17th June 2020 by
The book is well presented for cadets and easy to use. At just 56 pages it really is only essential information and the book is a very slim edition. Saying that I think it is great for cadets who want to focus on the core issues of expedition training.
